First and foremost, this book warmed my heart and then proceeded to break it shortly after. I'm always skeptical about books that are extremely hyped (I know I know, I'm a pretentious hipster like that). This story, the characters, Niven's lyrical writing style, and most of all the message completely obliterated me emotionally.
Niven did an absolutely phenomenal job of handling such difficult subjects, like mental illness. I enjoy reading about fragile topics like this because of how common they really are. So many people deal with mental illnesses and those who don't personally deal with it have probably been affected by a family member or friend who has dealt with it. Her writing is lyrical and all consuming. Instead of looking into the characters' stories and journeys, I felt as if I was living them alongside these characters. There are so many underlying themes and messages in this novel. Apart from what you get on the surface, once you take a second and think about what you've read...you'll be able to read between the lines.
Finch and Violet's story hit me hard. I fell in love with Finch and I expect you will too. I fell in love with their love. I won't go into further detail about the plot because I don't want to spoil it for you.
This story deeply affected me, it touched my heart. This novel is a complete paradox. It's dark, yet hopeful. It's beautiful, yet devastating. It's heartwarming, yet heartbreaking. I expect it will change lives and maybe even save some.
