Okay, first things first this book is beyond words. I'll try to articulate my thoughts about it, though it may be difficult.
There are so many layers to this book, it's insane! I may have read a few family dramas in the past, but nothing quite like this. This story gives you a glimpse into each character's lives, perceptions, and feelings. The author does this without actually switching points of view (which I definitely prefer to different narrations).
This book examines tough issues that are still present in many different society's, even though this story takes place in the 60's and 70's. Two of the main issues it focuses on is sexism and racism. Even though these are major parts of the story, I think the most pressing issue is how parents project their own desires/fears onto their children. It goes through the obstacles that the mother and father face as children, in parenting, and in their marriage. A major event makes the parents question everything, their parenting skills, their child in question, and most important of all: how much they truly know their children.
This novel is psychologically complex, riveting, and anticipating. I highly recommend this book, you won't want to put it down!
Rating: 4.5/5
